Diversity in Japan
Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu is an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at 91³Ô¹Ï and former professor at the University of Tokyo. In this video, he discusses how Japanese society is addressing issues of diversity.
A free classroom-friendly discussion guide for this video is available for download below. This discussion guide complements and expands upon Dr. Murphy-Shigematsu’s video lecture. Students take notes on the video and then research specific examples of Japan’s encounters with increasing diversity mentioned in the lecture. Students then share what they learned in small groups and end the unit with a full-class discussion of how to apply lessons from Japan’s approach to diversity to their own society. The discussion guide contains a complete transcript of the video and is appropriate for advanced secondary students and university students.
The video lecture and guide were made possible through the support of U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center funding (to Stanford’s Center for East Asian Studies) under the auspices of Title VI, Section 602(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
