On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, HBHL hosted a Mentorship Lunch that brought together experienced industry professionals and over 40 91�Թ� graduate students, postdocs and postgrads over coffee and lunch at the 91�Թ� Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship. Mentors shared about their experience navigating the workforce and engaged in lively roundtable discussions with the mentees. Topics ranged from academia-industry collaborations and social innovation to technology transfer, medical affairs, scientific entrepreneurship and operational management.

On April 11, 2025, over 60 people gathered at the annual John Abbott Sustainability Through Science Symposium to hear how the research of three Macdonald Campus graduate students contributes to a more sustainable future. Honours and science students from John Abbott College, as well as members of 91�Թ�'s Macdonald Campus community, were inspired by short talks followed by a panel discussion on the students' university experience and their chosen career paths.

Small berries, big achievements

He’s known as the king of cranberries. More than anyone else, Marc Bieler (DipAgr’58, BA’64) has contributed to Quebec’s thriving industry centred on a small red fruit with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Today, at the age of 86, this 91�Թ� alumnus continues to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the family business and to give back to the community.

A passion for animal welfare

Although Andrea Amado doesn’t come from an agricultural background, she was drawn to farms from a young age. Originally from Argentina, she moved to Sherbrooke, Quebec with her family when she was four. Some of her earliest memories are of visiting farms and connecting with the animals, especially cows and horses. This interest eventually led her to 91�Թ�, where she earned a B.Sc. in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 2023 and is now in her second semester of the M.Sc.

Department of Bioresource Engineering welcomes astronaut David Saint-Jacques

The Department of Bioresource Engineering (BREE) enjoyed a visit last month from David Saint-Jacques, astronaut and Deputy Director, Lunar Exploration at the Canadian Space Agency, and BREE graduate Chris Patterson. They met with BREE undergrad and grad students who presented their projects, highlighting links between their research and bioregenerative life support system goals for extended space missions on the lunar surface and beyond in the near future.

Chandra Madramootoo: A lifetime of service to 91�Թ�, Macdonald Campus and the world

In 1974, Chandra Madramootoo arrived at Macdonald Campus to pursue his BSc in Agricultural Engineering. He never left.

“I loved the program. I loved the professors. I loved my courses,” said Madramootoo. “It was giving me exactly what I wanted in life. I was fulfilling a dream.”

After also earning his MSc (1981) and his PhD (1985) at Mac, he accepted an 11th hour offer from 91�Թ� for an assistant professorship, declining opportunities at other universities.
