Expert: Fires linked to lithium-ion batteries

Published: 22 May 2025

Montreal has seen a threefold increase in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in just two years, according to the city’s latest fire department report. E-bikes and e-scooters are the main culprits, but the batteries that power everything from cellphones to power tools are increasingly being flagged as fire hazards.

Jinhyuk Lee is an Assistant Professor of Materials Engineering. He studies battery materials, degradation and safety. Lee can explain how lithium-ion batteries fail, what causes them to catch fire, and how manufacturers, governments and consumers can help reduce risk through better design, storage and regulation.
